After three years of practicing law at the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson in Los Angeles, CA, I decided to hang my own shingle. Naively, I was sure there would be people lined up just waiting to take advantage of my great service.
Little did I know, getting the phone to ring in my law practice was just the beginning of the battle.
I had no idea I’d have to learn how to do sales too. My dad was a salesman, and I went to law school to avoid that fate!
“I’m a professional,” I thought, “not a salesman.” And yet, my practice was floundering.
I would often spend 3-4 exhausting hours with a prospect, only to find out at the end of the meeting that they were shopping around for the best deal or had to think about it. (Truth was … I spent so long with people because I was scared to quote my fee.)
I approached each initial consultation with a knot in my stomach because, if they didn’t say yes, I wouldn’t be able to pay my one part-time staff person, let alone support my family.
I was terrified to quote my fees.
I knew I didn’t have a good way to do it. My fees were really not based on anything rational other than what I thought I should charge and, truth be told, each time I quoted a fee, I was creating a breach of trust in the relationship. My prospects could feel it and they couldn’t say yes to working with me.
It was so bad, I found myself praying to God for help. (Can you relate?)
I was grasping at anything I thought could possibly help. And then it happened…

I didn’t have an extra $10,000 at the time, but I found the resources and did it anyway and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

How your phone is answered is important, but even more important is what’s said by the person answering your phone when someone calls inquiring about your services.
Lawyer after lawyer has told us their marketing isn’t working, but when we’ve delved in to fix the marketing, we’ve far too often found out that it isn’t the marketing that’s not working, it’s the person fielding prospect calls who isn’t working.
And it’s not their fault. I’d guess you haven’t trained (or been trained) on how to move your inquiry calls from interest to prospect.
Listen, if someone is calling your office to ask about your services, they need you. If you are not getting the appointment for the consultation made at least 90% of the time, something needs to change.
Losing appointments before they are even made is costing you boatloads of time, money and energy.
You are wasting your marketing dollars and efforts until you fix this.
And if you are getting the appointments set, but they are canceling before they make it into your office, well, I don’t need to tell you how bad that is for your business.
I am going to give you the exact scripts I used to train my Client Services Director (CSD) and the CSDs of hundreds of lawyers so the appointment gets made with ease.

What are you sending to your prospects in advance of their appointment?
What I see most lawyers do (and what I did before I knew better) is either not send anything to prospects in advance of their appointment or send something not specifically designed to inspire confidence, eager anticipation about the meeting (yes, your clients can look forward to coming in to meet with you even if they are coming in for a bankruptcy or divorce!) and pre-prime the prospects to do business with you.
Or even worse, I see many lawyers send out information that makes it MORE likely that prospects will CANCEL their appointment or not say yes to moving forward when they do come in.
Once you’ve implemented my easy to follow Client Engagement System, here’s what you are going to do instead …
Immediately after your prospect makes an appointment, you will send them a pre-meeting package (either by mail or electronically) that is specially designed to get your prospects primed to say yes.
My system will show you exactly what needs to be in the package you send out and guide you to design the ideal homework assignment for your prospects before they come in to meet with you.
Now, you might be thinking to yourself, “Homework? My prospects aren’t going to do homework.”
I know it’s counter-intuitive, but trust me, not only will they do their homework, they’ll love you for it. I’ll show you exactly how this works in my system.
Plus, I’m going to guide you step by step on exactly what should happen between the time your pre-meeting package goes out and your prospects appointment date so they begin to love you and your firm before they ever make it in the door.

This might seem simple, but for most lawyers, it’s not.
What do you do now when a client comes in to meet with you for an initial consultation?
Do you know what you are going to say in advance of each meeting that will allow your prospects to see you as the exact trusted advisor they need to guide them to the right answers?

Before I created this meeting structure and my script, I would spend up to three hours with a prospect only to hear they weren’t going forward or “had to think about it”.
I was wasting my time and my prospects time because I didn’t know how to take and keep control of my meetings.
With the Client Engagement System, you’ll take control of every meeting, have confidence about exactly what to say and how to say it and easily move into quoting your fee in such a way that whether your prospect says yes or not, they are going to realize tremendous value from the experience.

That’s the exact WRONG THING to do in a new client meeting.

People buy based on emotion and justify their decision with logic.
I have developed a very specific technique that ensures prospects internalize what they’ve learned and understand at an emotional level why they must not leave my office without moving forward with me.
This is NOT something you are going to tell your prospects. You are going to use a technique that compels your prospects to TELL YOU why they must work with you.
And the only time they won’t engage is when they truly and simply do not need your services.
When they do, they’ll say yes, nearly every single time… all because of the powerful structure of your meeting and your script.
You’ll get to see my script, plus an annotated version of my script where I walk you through why I said what I said and when I said it, and you’ll also receive a video presentation of me working with actual clients plus an audio presentation so you can listen at home, in the car or while you exercise.

I remember the first time I shared my new fee schedule with one of my valued referral sources.
He asked if he could take it with him, and he shared it with one of his clients, who immediately called me up, scheduled an appointment and engaged me for a plan that was $2,000 more than I would have charged before.
